You can not doubt that he is very gifted and approaches everything with creativity. And did you know about his acquaintance with Jared Leto and Harry Styles? Still, if you dig deep into her biography you can definitely be surprised. His charisma and creativity are disarming. But how did Alessandro Michele change Gucci?

Over the many years since Michele’s appointment as Gucci creative director, he has created such a fantastic world in the fashion empire that for Gucci’s most enthusiastic fans, pride and rapturous cheers are guaranteed.

Michele’s Childhood and Youth

Michele grew up in Europe, specifically Italy, where everything was luxurious and expensive as far as culture and aesthetics were concerned. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius, he has a slender build and is approx. 5 ft 9 inches in heigh. The boy grew up in Rome in the family of an artistic, free-spirited father, who earned his living as a technician for Alitalia Airlines. His mother was a fan of Hollywood glamour. That may have been a good start to her career as an assistant studio executive.

He has an older sister, Roberta, and two nephews, Tommasso and Pietro.

Alessandro Michele’s family has always encouraged his love of real beauty and nature. Instead of playing soccer as a child, he spent hours visiting art galleries, churches and museums with his father.

From Michele’s childhood memories of the Gucci brand, back in the ’70s and ’80s he saw a very different incarnation of the popular brand’s aesthetic. It was always a powerful symbol of wealth and no other company did that.

Career Launch

Trained as a costume designer at the Academy of Costume and Fashion in Rome, Alessandro Michele began his career by working at Les Copains, an Italian knitwear brand.

He then went on to work as a senior accessory designer under Silvia Venturini Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi.

In 2002, he was spotted by Tom Ford and invited to the Gucci design office in London. Since then, Alessandro has proven himself in various positions in the Gucci studio. In 2006 he served as director of leather goods design, in 2011 as assistant creative director of Frida Giannini.

Michele’s Career at Gucci

Alessandro Michele's own vision

In the late ’80s, Michele’s memories of Gucci are very fuzzy. And then Tom Ford took over. He really transformed the company and did something tremendous.

After working with Silvia Venturini Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld and Frida Giannini at Fendi, Michele, along with Giannini, was invited by the then creative director of Gucci to design the brand’s bags. At the time, the Gucci designers’ headquarters was based in London.

Michele recalls his first meeting with Ford. It was a sunny London day, and Michele, in his 30s, was so impressed by Ford’s manners that, he says, he couldn’t resist immediately agreeing to a job offer with the team.

On January 21, 2015, Alessandro became creative director and the person responsible for all product categories, collections and the global image of the Gucci brand.

His first week was spent in the elegant floral space that the Gucci design team rented until 2006. There was nothing superfluous and the ambitious Alessandro Michele literally drowned in fashion.

Alessandro Michele’s sense of fashion style and fresh eye have made him a popular name in the fashion industry, making celebrities like Jared Leto, Lana Del Rey, Elton John and Bjork follow his aesthetic faithfully in creating their looks. One such example of this iconic look was Jared Leto’s look at the 2019 Met Gala, where he wore a floor-length Gucci dress studded with diamonds, holding his own head.

A Little about Gucci Itself

Gucci was founded in 1921 in Florence. The company was originally considered a brand for the production of leather goods and a variety of accessories for riding. All products eventually moved into the category of handbags and suitcases, and further introduced a number of designs and signature touches that propelled Gucci aesthetic into the upper echelons of the fashion world. These included bamboo handles and moccasins adorned with horse mustaches, a floral print commissioned for Grace Kelly, and a shoulder bag renamed after Jackie Kennedy. And two of the company’s most recognizable symbols among the fashion industry world are the double G logo and the green-red-green woven stripe. Gucci has been seriously defending its trademark rights and defending it in every way possible to other companies.

Personal Life of Alessandro Michele

Alessandro Michele is gay. And it is not a secret. His boyfriend, Giovanni (Vanni) Attili, has been Alessandro’s partner for over a decade. Vanni is a professor of urban planning at the Sapienza University of Rome. As far as we know, he spends a lot of time studying the Haida and Dakelh peoples of Alaska.

As for the famous designer’s house, he shares a poetic 18th-century attic with his lover. Michele admits that it took him a while to tell Attili that he has 360 pairs of shoes.

There are twenty chairs in one room of his house, which is perfectly normal for a creative person. Although it looks more like a warehouse.

In addition to the chairs, Michele’s current collection includes many miniature portraits, Meissen porcelain pugs, Viennese painted birds, and music pieces.

Awards of the Gucci Designer Alessandro Michele

Alessandro's partner

Alessandro Michele, as a fashion modern mastermind won the international Designer of the Year award at the British Fashion Awards and the 2016 CFDA International Award in America for the first time.

In 2016 and 2017 he was included in Hypebeast magazine’s HB100 list, which consists of the most influential figures in his field.

Michele’s New Position at the Company

  • Elsa Schiaparelli once said: “In difficult times, fashion is always outrageous.” Alessandro Michele outdid Demna Gvasalia with the Balenciaga brand this year. The two designers later teamed up to discuss the magic of fashion and the chic Gucci show.
  • One of the most interesting collaborations happened with the famous youth singer. When Harry Styles released his second studio album Fine Line, it was followed by the release of a commemorative T-shirt by Alessandro Michele and Gucci.

The limited-edition t-shirt featured a red and black Harry Styles x Fine Line graphic on the front and center. This design was printed on an eco-friendly unisex T-shirt and only cost $75.

  • The capsule collection for the Net-A-Porter store turned out great. There were a total of 20 pieces in the collection invented by Alessandro Michele. Creating these images the designer was obviously inspired by the traditional Italian glamour and tapestries of the XIX century. This style Michele translates for the second season in a row in Gucci collections and now in collaboration.
  • The Italian brand and The North Face have announced a joint collection on Gucci’s YouTube channel. It discusses the idea that in modern outdoor clothing functionality must necessarily be combined with beauty.

Michele’s New Position at the Company

When Alessandro Michele became Gucci’s creative director in 2015, he completely redesigned the fall 2015 collection in less than a week.

Since then, the master has made maximalism a constant in Gucci culture. Alessandro Michele’s own vision is mixed prints, bulky silhouettes and unbelievable textures. Things are very colorful and bold, funny and strange, and on top of that they are studded with sequins. All this found success throughout the fashion world. In Michele’s third year at the helm of the brand, sales as the net worth jumped by almost 50 percent. And that’s just unimaginable!

Michele introduced several things that people needed. For example, freedom – the ability to be oneself or eccentricity, which means individuality.

Like most brands like Gucci, the brand stuck to standards for years and presented five or more collections a year. But after Michele reduced the number of annual fashion shows in 2017, he combined the men’s and women’s collections into one. In doing so, the creator announced that he intended to hold only two shows a year. This decision was taken together with Marco Bizzarri, the president of Gucci. Michele was convinced that even large companies like his should invest in creative freedom, and that surely pay dividends. As Michele believes, it takes time and effort to develop creativity.

Michele’s Friendship with Jared Leto

Alessandro Michele, as a fashion modern mastermind

They met in Los Angeles early in Michele’s tenure as creative director and have been close friends and even partners ever since.

Michele’s passion and love for what he does and his love for people and things, for art and culture, for his pets and animals, for celebrating color – can’t help but admire Jared.

According to the singer, Michele is the reason the brand is so successful today.

A Fresh Look and a New Direction for the Company

When the world was struggling with COVID-19, it was as if Michele had returned to childhood and felt fear like with mental illness. He had plenty of time to rethink all the values.

He has always talked about his love for nature and the connection he feels with plants and animals. Alessandro Michele expressed it in countless designs – strawberry-print pants, tigers on T-shirts and snakes crawling into sweaters – but he says he felt it most deeply last year.

Michele believes that humanity has done many terrible things to this beautiful earth.

The fashion industry bears some of the blame for the environmental situation, as it creates 10 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions and about 92 tons of textile waste each year. In an effort to reduce its own footprint, Gucci has implemented a plan to halve its carbon dioxide emissions by 2025. The company is working diligently to ensure that raw materials and products are tracked. Last year, Jane Fonda and Lil Nas X were the first stars on the advertising campaign for Gucci’s eco-friendly “Off the Grid” collection. This quality Gucci collection designed by Alessandro Michele himself was created from recycled, biologically and environmentally friendly materials. And this is just the beginning. You can follow future collections on Michele’s Instagram account or on the brand’s official website.
