Michele’s Childhood and Youth
Michele grew up in Europe, specifically Italy, where everything was luxurious and expensive as far as culture and aesthetics were concerned. The boy grew up in Rome in the family of an artistic, free-spirited father, who earned his living as a technician for Alitalia Airlines. His mother was a fan of Hollywood glamour. He has an older sister, Roberta, and two nephews, Tommasso and Pietro.
Alessandro Michele’s family has always encouraged his love of real beauty and nature. Instead of playing soccer as a child, he spent hours visiting art galleries, churches and museums with his father.
From Michele’s childhood memories of the Gucci brand, back in the ’70s and ’80s he saw a very different incarnation of the popular brand’s aesthetic. It was always a powerful symbol of wealth and no other company did that.
Trained as a costume designer at the Academy of Costume and Fashion in Rome, Alessandro Michele began his career by working at Les Copains, an Italian knitwear brand.
He then went on to work as a senior accessory designer under Silvia Venturini Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi.
In 2002, he was spotted by Tom Ford and invited to the Gucci design office in London. Since then, Alessandro has proven himself in various positions in the Gucci studio. In 2006 he served as director of leather goods design, in 2011 as assistant creative director of Frida Giannini.
Michele’s Career at Gucci
In the late ’80s, Michele’s memories of Gucci are very fuzzy. And then Tom Ford took over. He really transformed the company and did something tremendous.
After working with Silvia Venturini Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld and Frida Giannini at Fendi, Michele, along with Giannini, was invited by the then creative director of Gucci to design the brand’s bags. At the time, the Gucci designers’ headquarters was based in London.
Michele recalls his first meeting with Ford. It was a sunny London day, and Michele, in his 30s, was so impressed by Ford’s manners that, he says, he couldn’t resist immediately agreeing to a job offer with the team.
On January 21, 2015, Alessandro became creative director and the person responsible for all product categories, collections and the global image of the Gucci brand.
His first week was spent in the elegant floral space that the Gucci design team rented until 2006. There was nothing superfluous and the ambitious Alessandro Michele literally drowned in fashion.
Alessandro Michele’s sense of fashion style and fresh eye have made him a popular name in the fashion industry, making celebrities like Jared Leto, Lana Del Rey, Elton John and Bjork follow his aesthetic faithfully in creating their looks. Gucci was founded in 1921 in Florence. The company was originally considered a brand for the production of leather goods and a variety of accessories for riding. Personal Life of Alessandro Michele
Alessandro Michele is gay. And it is not a secret. His boyfriend, Giovanni (Vanni) Attili, has been Alessandro’s partner for over a decade. Vanni is a professor of urban planning at the Sapienza University of Rome. As far as we know, he spends a lot of time studying the Haida and Dakelh peoples of Alaska.
As for the famous designer’s house, he shares a poetic 18th-century attic with his lover. Michele admits that it took him a while to tell Attili that he has 360 pairs of shoes.

They met in Los Angeles early in Michele’s tenure as creative director and have been close friends and even partners ever since.

A Fresh Look and a New Direction for the Company
When the world was struggling with COVID-19, it was as if Michele had returned to childhood and felt fear like with mental illness. He had plenty of time to rethink all the values.
He has always talked about his love for nature and the connection he feels with plants and animals. Alessandro Michele expressed it in countless designs – strawberry-print pants, tigers on T-shirts and snakes crawling into sweaters – but he says he felt it most deeply last year.
Michele believes that humanity has done many terrible things to this beautiful earth.
The fashion industry bears some of the blame for the environmental situation, as it creates 10 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions and about 92 tons of textile waste each year. In an effort to reduce its own footprint, Gucci has implemented a plan to halve its carbon dioxide emissions by 2025. The company is working diligently to ensure that raw materials and products are tracked. Last year, Jane Fonda and Lil Nas X were the first stars on the advertising campaign for Gucci’s eco-friendly “Off the Grid” collection.
