Having a minimalist wardrobe is becoming more and more enticing as our future is becoming more and more sustainable. A lot of people are beginning to realize that the less value we place on material items, the more value we can palace on our physical experiences. Why have an overflowing closet of clothes you never wear when you could have an overflowing mind of beautiful memories? There is really no need to clutter our lives with material items that go left untouched. So have you ever wondered how to put together a minimalist wardrobe? I certainly have. Creating a minimalist wardrobe will not happen overnight. It is definitely hard to part with some items, no matter how unnecessary they may be. Today we will work our way through a minimalist wardrobe checklist that I have discovered based on my own personal journey. I will also add in some suggested companies which will provide you with high quality, sustainable and affordable items to add to your new minimalist closet. Let’s get started.
The first thing we must touch on is how to minimize wardrobe clutter. Collecting clothing is something you don’t notice you are doing as it’s happening, but before you know it you’re standing before what seems to be a dragon who is spewing clothes rather than fire out of its mouth. If this is sounding far too familiar to yourself, fear not. I too have found myself in this exact predicament. My largest piece of advice I have to offer is to declutter your closet in multiple phases. Go through your clothes once and donate or sell everything you never wear. Take a few days and go through your closet again. This time is a little more choosy about what you keep. Ask yourself questions like: “When was the last time I wore this?”, “Is this even my style anymore?”, “Why is the tag still on this?”, and so on. Keep repeating this cycle until your closet has dwindled down to the size you have been seeking. Once again, this will take time. The capsule wardrobe women have been searching for is not an overnight adventure. It is an ongoing journey that quite honestly never ends. Now, let’s get into the minimalist wardrobe-essentials.
Let’s begin by talking about our undergarments. Depending on what kind of lifestyle you lead, you will require different undergarments. For example, if you’re extremely active you will need athletic undergarments as well as everyday wear. If you lead a fairly laid back lifestyle, you will require less. My advice here would be to only buy undergarments for one week of activities as you can easily throw everything in the wash at the end of the week. If you do laundry more often than once a week, you can have even less. However, keep in mind undergarments are not as easy to wear twice as say a T-shirt, so if you need to air on the side of caution, undergarments are the right area to do so. Two of my favourite stores that I have been purchasing my undergarments from are Blush Lingerie and Hara The Label. Both of these companies are sustainable and provide versatile undergarments that are useful for more than one occasion. They are also extremely comfortable so I suggest checking them out. My favourite undergarment in my minimalist closet is my cotton high leg bikini panties from Blush Lingerie. They were seriously a game-changer for my comfort as well as self-confidence.
Next up on the list of minimalist closet essentials are what I like to call “The Basics”. Now, what are the basics you may be wondering? Well, the basics are pieces of versatile clothing that can be casual if left alone but dressed up using the simple addition of layers or accessories. Some clothing that falls under the basics are simple shirts in neutral colours, two to three pairs of reliable jeans, a nice dress that can be both casual and formal, two to three pairs of shorts and so on. With your basics, you will always want to stick to neutral colours. This way they will all work interchangeably whilst styling an outfit. The same shirt that works with your jeans should also work layered under your dress or paired with your shorts. This is the easiest way to create a capsule wardrobe for beginners. With all of these neutral articles of clothing, it is important to add some pops of colour every once and awhile. This brings us to the importance of accessorizing. Keep reading to learn more.
I know, who would have thought accessories would have been included whilst talking about how to have a minimalist wardrobe? I didn’t at first either. However, if you keep your basics neutral, it is nice to have a few accessories to add some colour into the mix. Some examples of accessories are a nice belt, a bright bandana, colourful socks, a cool hat and/or a nice versatile bag. I know we are dealing with how to create a minimalist wardrobe so having too many accessories isn’t ideal, though it is completely allowed and encouraged. Having a minimalist wardrobe does not mean you have to lose your sense of style and self-expression. Having a minimalist wardrobe simply means we are refining our sense of style and compressing it into the key factors that make us who we are. If anything, heading in the direction of a minimized wardrobe has taught me a lot about who I am and who I want people to see me as. Moving on, let’s talk about outerwear.
Outerwear can be tricky at times depending on where you live and what kind of climate(s) you are dealing with. If you are living in constant warmth, the need for jackets, scarves and heavy boots won’t affect you. If you are dealing with harsh winters, it is inevitable that you will need more clothes in your minimalist wardrobe. What we want to keep in mind is versatility. Perhaps finding a jacket that can be used both in the fall and winter as it has built-in layers. Having one pair of shoes for each season is also a great way to keep the outerwear to a minimum. Everyone’s minimalist wardrobe journey will be personal as everyone has different needs. All that matters is that you do the best you can and that you don’t rush the process.
